Gas trucks are cheaper overall to purchase and maintain... plus they burn a cheaper and easier to locate fuel. If you drive them a lot you might get a diesel to pencil out but on a newer one has a lot of expensive stuff to go wrong. Older ones will run forever but will get its tailgate handed to it by a newer gasser.

F-350's got a solid axle in '86, F-250's didn't until '99. 2wd still have the TIB.

I personally own an 01 f-350 reg cab long bed 4x4 7.3 powerstroke, i've driven a friends 97 powerstroke. I'd prefer the 99-03 7.3 because my truck only has the edge evo programmer and it runs amazingly. My friends 97(he sold it a few years back) had quite a bit more mods than my diesel at the time, He had aftermarket intakes, aftermarket turbo housing (banks i believe), chiped and programmed (stacked), also had a banks trans command on it. Personally, i didnt think it held a candle in the wind to my diesel, i mean yeah it ran good, but to me, it still didnt run anything like mine with only a programmer on it. i also blew a lot more smoke where his barely blew anything but a little see through cloud when you got on it. It had the get up and go part, but my diesel seemed to run a helluva lot better than his. I guess it all boils down to preference really, if you like the 93-98 style go for it, or if you prefer the 99-03 style, go for that. For me, the choice is clear, i'd buy another 99-03 7.3 in a heartbeart no questions asked. Just remember to keep up with the maintenance and it'll last you a LONG time.

Also, yes the f-350s came equipped with a solid axle leaf sprung, where as the f250's came with a leaf sprung ttb d50 up until the 99 style superduties, then they went with the solid axle d50 in the f250s and the 350s got the d60 solid axle.(only thing i dont like is the none servicable $250 bucks per side wheel bearings :S ). But good luck, and know that only you can choose the style truck you want to get, dont let anyone sway your mind, pick which ever one catches your eye, or you feel runs better in your opinion.

All '99-up F350 DRW trucks have the front D60, but the SRW F350s didn't get the D60 until late 2001-early 2002. '99-up F250s had the D50 up front until the beginning of the '02 model year.

f250's could have the D50 in the front of them up until 2005 actually....
