1971 Ford F-100 PreRunner Nuclear Orange

When Chris McCoy first saw this 1971 Ford F-100, it was nothing more than a cab and a frame sitting in a San Dimas. California backyard with weeds growing through it. Being a mechanic by trade, Chris decided to purchase the truck and turn it in to something that he could someday race Baja with.

Solo Motorsports installed one of their twin I-beam suspension systems on the front that provides an estimated 20-inches of wheel travel. The front suspension also uses Fox shocks 2.5 Bypass shocks with a remote reservoir and 3.0 coilovers with 450/500 springs. A set of Wilwood 4-piston calipers and Wilwood rotors bring the 17-inch Ultra Wheels and 37×12.50×17 Cooper SST tires to a stop. A Solo Motorsports swing set steering setup keeps the truck pointed in the right direction.

The rear suspension consists of a pair of Solo Motorsports long links arms with a combination of King 3.0 shocks and Fox 2.5 Shocks that provides almost 30-inches of travel. A Ford 9-inch rear axle loaded with 5.13 gears a spool, and Wilwood brakes puts the power to the ground.

Chris went to CJM automotive of Glendora, CA for his engine. They built him a 400-horsepower Ford 351W using forged TRW pistons (11:1 compression ratio) a Comp roller cam, Edelbrock cylinder heads, an Air Grabber intake manifold, a 750cfm Holley carburetor, and a K&N air cleaner. A Pertronix ignition systems lights the fire and the exhaust is handled by Flowmaster headers. The engine is backed by a Ford C6 automatic transmission built by Harrell’s Transmission in Covina, California.

The cab features a full cage, Beard seats with ARP harnesses, a MOMO steering wheel, custom console, PCI Race Radio, Art Carr shifter, Auto Meter gauges, 7-Inch Lowrance GPS unit, and a K&N fresh air system.

On the exterior the F-100 received an Autofab fiberglass hood and front fenders along with Glassworks bedsides. The bed features a JAZ fuel cell, a Stewart’s Raceworks jack mount, a pair of wheels/tires and an extra driveshaft. There’s also a large Solo built aluminum compartment for tools, extra oil and other supplies.

J and S Auto Body in Glendora, CA applied the custom orange paint. Sticking with an old school round light theme, Chris outfitted his F-100 with five 7-inch RuffStuff HID lights mounted into a huge attitude adjustable frame. A RuffStuff’s Brake Light Bar has been fitted with LED’s and attached to the cage.

Growing up, my father always believed that every family needed a truck—there’s just something about having a vehicle capable of hauling anything at a moment’s notice. That philosophy stuck with me, and it’s been the foundation of my lifelong passion for Ford trucks.

While I’m best known for my work with Ford Rangers, I’ve owned a wide variety of Ford trucks over the years—including F-150s, F-250s, F-350s, and even larger rigs like the Ford Excursion, Ford Expedition, and a 1982 Ford Econoline Sportsmobile camper van. I’ve used these vehicles for everything from family transportation to towing car trailers and campers, and each one has fueled my love for Ford’s versatility and durability.

I especially enjoy the styling of 1970s and 1980s Ford trucks—the bold designs, rugged presence, and classic charm are timeless. Sharing my passion for Ford trucks, vans, and SUVs with other enthusiasts online brings me a great deal of joy, and it’s why I created Blue Oval Trucks.

This website is dedicated to helping Ford truck enthusiasts explore, learn about, and celebrate these incredible vehicles. While I share my expertise and experiences here, Blue Oval Trucks is an independent enthusiast site and is not affiliated with Ford Motor Company.
