Overlanding Ford Expedition on 37-Inch Tires

I spent 3-weeks camping and travelling the backroads of the northwest in my Ford F350 FX4 (See). I’ve also spent a month travelling the Trans America Trail in a 2019 Ford Ranger. But the most I’ve ever done in my Ford Expedition was road trip through Texas and sleep in the back of it. The Expedition is roomy. I’m 6’2″ and had enough room in the back to stretch out and still have room for my dog and my cooler.

One thing all of this has taught me was that I really wish there were more off-road accessories available for the Ford Expedition, and that if there were, it could be an amazing overlanding vehicle.

That’s why this 2018 Ford Expedition caught my attention. The owner is so serious about overlanding with this vehicle that he started a business called Kingdom Overlanding.

This Ford Expedition features an ICON Vehicle Dynamics 2.25-Inch Stage 2 Suspension System with billet upper control arms. The rear coil springs were recently upgraded from the original 650lb spring rate to a 750lb spring rate. The lift makes way for 37-inch Maxxis RAZR MT tires on Method 701 Bead Grip wheels. The Bead Grip technology allows deflation of tires down to pressures that previously would have required beadlock wheels to make sure tires didn’t come off the wheel. Ok, the lift didn’t actually make room for 37-inch tires. The owner also had to cut the fender openings to make room.

The roof rack is actually made by the owner’s business and is available through their Overlanding Shop. Being made of lightweight and durable aluminum it bolts right on without any drilling required and can hold up to 300lbs of weight. The front-facing mounts are utilized to install a KC Hilite 57-inch Pro6 Gravity LED Light Bar System with (9) Pro6 Gravity 180-watt LED lights.

The roof rack also supports the 23Zero Walkabout 72 California King Bed roof top tent. The roof top tent allows you to quickly setup camp after a long day of overlanding, and to quickly close it back up when you need to continue your journey in the morning. And even though there’s room to sleep in an Expedition, having a tent on the roof frees up space inside the vehicle for other gear and supplies.

Speaking of the interior space, the owner of this Expedition custom fabricated a kitchen and drawer setup for the rear cargo area that still allows having one of the third-row seats up for additional passengers.

Electrical power for overlanding trips is provided by a Wagan Tech Lithium Cube 1200. Whether you need to power a battery charger, refrigerator, CPAP, laptop, or lighting for remote photography, this Lithium Cube has you covered.

Growing up, my father always believed that every family needed a truck—there’s just something about having a vehicle capable of hauling anything at a moment’s notice. That philosophy stuck with me, and it’s been the foundation of my lifelong passion for Ford trucks.

While I’m best known for my work with Ford Rangers, I’ve owned a wide variety of Ford trucks over the years—including F-150s, F-250s, F-350s, and even larger rigs like the Ford Excursion, Ford Expedition, and a 1982 Ford Econoline Sportsmobile camper van. I’ve used these vehicles for everything from family transportation to towing car trailers and campers, and each one has fueled my love for Ford’s versatility and durability.

I especially enjoy the styling of 1970s and 1980s Ford trucks—the bold designs, rugged presence, and classic charm are timeless. Sharing my passion for Ford trucks, vans, and SUVs with other enthusiasts online brings me a great deal of joy, and it’s why I created Blue Oval Trucks.

This website is dedicated to helping Ford truck enthusiasts explore, learn about, and celebrate these incredible vehicles. While I share my expertise and experiences here, Blue Oval Trucks is an independent enthusiast site and is not affiliated with Ford Motor Company.
